About this tool
The Public Provident Fund has a 15-year lock-in, a yearly deposit limit of 1.5 lakh, and tax-free interest and maturity. Enter your yearly deposit, the current rate and the tenure to see the maturity value. The government revises the PPF rate every quarter, so change the rate field to match.
PPF rules in brief
- Lock-in of 15 years, which can be extended in blocks of 5 years.

- The rate is set by the government every quarter. It is 7.1% for October to December 2026.
- Loans are allowed from the 3rd to the 6th year, and partial withdrawals from the 7th year.
- Interest and maturity amount are tax-free. Deposits qualify for the Section 80C deduction under the old regime only.
What ₹1,50,000 a year becomes
Depositing the maximum ₹1,50,000 at the start of each year for 15 years at 7.1% gives a maturity value of about ₹40,68,209. You deposit ₹22,50,000, so about ₹18,18,209 is tax-free interest. If the rate changes, the real figure will differ, so update the rate in the calculator whenever it is revised.
When to deposit
PPF interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month. Depositing before the 5th of a month counts for that month. If you invest a lump sum once a year, doing it in the first week of April gives the full year of interest on that deposit. This calculator assumes a deposit at the start of every year.
PPF compared with FD and SIP
PPF is government-backed and tax-free, so its effective return is attractive for a safe allocation. Its limits are the 15-year lock-in and the annual cap. An FD offers flexibility but its interest is taxable, and an equity SIP can grow faster but with market risk. Many people hold PPF as the stable part of a mix. Use the FD and SIP calculators to compare outcomes over the same period.
Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF rate?
The rate is 7.1% for the October to December 2026 quarter. The government reviews it every quarter.
Is PPF maturity tax free?
Yes. Deposits qualify under Section 80C in the old regime, and interest and maturity are exempt.
When should I deposit?
Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and month end, so depositing before the 5th helps. This tool assumes a deposit at the start of each year.
Can I deposit PPF every month?
Yes, up to 12 deposits in a financial year, within the yearly limit of ₹1,50,000.
Is the PPF rate fixed for 15 years?
No. The rate is reviewed every quarter and applies to the whole balance, so your final maturity amount depends on the rates in force during those years.
