How to use the unix timestamp converter

  2. Click Timestamp to date, or Date to timestamp.
  3. Copy any of the formats shown.

About this tool

Unix time counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. Developers meet it in logs, databases, JWT claims and APIs. Enter a timestamp in seconds or milliseconds to see ISO 8601, UTC and your local time, or enter a date to get the epoch value back.

A worked example

The timestamp 1760000000 is 9 October 2025, 08:53:20 UTC. In India, which is UTC+5:30, that is 14:23:20 on the same day. A timestamp of 0 is the epoch itself: 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC.

Seconds or milliseconds?

Count the digits. A 10-digit number such as 1760000000 is in seconds. A 13-digit number such as 1760000000000 is in milliseconds, which is what JavaScript uses. Mixing them up gives a date in 1970 or one tens of thousands of years in the future. This tool treats numbers above 100 billion as milliseconds and everything smaller as seconds.

Getting a timestamp in code

WhereHowUnit
JavaScriptDate.now()Milliseconds
Pythontime.time()Seconds (decimal)
Linux or macOS shelldate +%sSeconds
Excel=(A1-DATE(1970,1,1))*86400Seconds

Frequently asked questions

Seconds or milliseconds?

Values above 100 billion are treated as milliseconds. Anything smaller is treated as seconds.

Which time zone is used?

The result shows UTC, ISO 8601, and your browser local time.

What is the Unix epoch?

The epoch is 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC. A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since then.

How do I convert a date to a timestamp?

Type the date, for example 2026-10-23 14:30, and click Date to timestamp. It is read in your browser time zone.

Why is my timestamp showing 1970?

You probably have a value in seconds that was treated as milliseconds, or a value of zero. Check the number of digits.
